Editor: Kenny De Meirleir
The Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome brings you multidisciplinary original research, practical clinical management, case reports, and literature reviews that give the entire health care delivery team a comprehensive understanding of the state-of-the-art and science in regard to CFS. A forum for ongoing debate and discussions on all issues related to CFS, the journal covers a wide array of disciplines that together create a complete picture of this baffling illness. Also, the journal's combination of basic sciences with epidemiology and clinical sciences makes it the ideal resource to keep you abreast of current literature in the field.
The Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome unites many disciplines to explore the cause and treatment of CFS. The journal does so in several unique ways:
1. Synthesis: The literature of CFS is scattered—not only by discipline, but by audience, geography, and history. This journal has established six or seven “Professional Review Columns” under the editorship of specialists in areas that may include:
Virology and Retrovirology
Neuroendoimmunology, Neurology & Neurosciences
Epidemiology
Basic and Clinical Immunology
Infectious Diseases
Pharmacological Probes
2. CFS Grand Rounds: Many traditional scholarly journals publish a “Treatment Reports” section, which is usually valuable for clinicians. However, CFS presents a complex number of approaches which are often dependent on the specialty of the provider and further hampered by a paucity of published controlled trials. The Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome taps the knowledge of invited specialists for very practical clinical discussions of diagnosis and management based on case reports.
3. Primary Research: The multidisciplinary nature of CFS research has resulted in studies scattered throughout the specialty journals, without a focus journal to call home. While it is important to publish in many different peer-reviewed journals, expert reviews take up lengthy periods of time and the lag time between submission and publication can often be up to two years. For that reason, a well-respected expert panel has been drawn together to serve as the Editorial Board, which allows for critical, rapid reviews of basic, clinical, and multidisciplinary work.
4. Symposiums: Occasions arise when meetings result in basic and clinical papers focused on a specialized theme representing a solid research front. The journal is available as an outlet for thematic symposiums; outstanding symposiums are co-published in hardcover format for marketing to individuals and institutions interested primarily in the topic of that symposium.
5. Professional Outreach: The journal is marketed to physicians from both a broad array of clinical specialities and more general practitioner categories. An important aim is to enhance awareness of CFS among larger pools of medical professionals.
6. Worth Repeating: This section considers seminal material published in foreign publications or periodicals with limited circulation for potential republication. A section of the review board has been asked to recommend articles from hard-to-access or overseas periodicals which may be deserving of reprinting in their entirety or may be alternatively noted with an informative, full-length abstract providing the author's address for requesting a reprint.
Utilizing the skills of authors from many fields, the editors and editorial board present articles and information that are both practical and thought-provoking. Primary care physicians, psychologists, and specialists, as well as researchers from the many disciplines studying this complex illness, will find the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome essential as they continue to battle CFS and attempt to make life more fulfilling and comfortable for its victims.
