Abstract
Background: Depression and negative symptoms represent two syndromes frequently found in schizophrenia. Although these two syndromes are considered as two distinct entities, they share many symptoms, and the impact of depression on the measurement of negative schizophrenic symptoms remains an open question. Methods: Twenty inpatients with negative schizophrenia (including ten subjects with depressive symptoms) were compared to twenty schizophrenia subjects without negative schizophrenia (including ten subjects with depressive symptoms). Negative symptoms were measured with a new rating scale for negative symptoms, the Motor-Affective-Social scale. This scale uses objective measures and differentiates expressive from social/functional negative symptoms. Results: For subjects without negative schizophrenia, depressive symptoms were associated with a higher level of social but not of expressive negative symptoms. For subjects with negative schizophrenia, depression was not associated with differences in expressive and social negative symptoms. Conclusion: Although depression and negative schizophrenia share many symptoms, depression has limited impact on the measurement of negative symptoms in schizophrenia. Depression is associated with an increase in social negative symptoms in patients with low level of negative symptoms at baseline. Depression does not increase the degree of negative symptoms in negative schizophrenia. Longitudinal studies should confirm these findings.
