The role of tobacco, virus and genes in oral cancer.
THE ROLE OF VIRUS, GENES AND TOBACCO IN ORAL CANCER

The prevalence of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has significantly increased over decades in several countries and human papilloma virus (HPV) has been indicated as one of the underlying causes. This suggests that HPV plays a role in the early stages of carcinogenesis but is not a requisite for the maintenance and progression of malignant state. p53 is a tumor suppressor gene that checks the cell and promotes apoptosis and cell repair that can be deactivated by mutations and a viral interaction leading to cancer and individuals with particular polymorphic variant of p53 is more susceptible to HPV-induced carcinogenesis. The present study has been carried out to detect and correlate p53 polymorphism/mutation, HPV DNA in the biopsy samples of oral cancer patients who had tobacco habits.

Papel de los Virus, los Genes y el Tabaco en el Cáncer de la Cavidad Oral

La prevalencia de carcinoma de células escamosas de la cavidad oral ha aumentado significativamente en las últimas décadas en diversos países, y la infección por el papilomavirus humano (HPV) se considera una de las causas subyacentes. Este fenómeno sugiere que el HPV tiene un papel en las etapas tempranas de la carcinogénesis; sin embargo, no sería un requisito para el mantenimiento y la progresión del estado de malignidad. El gen p53 es un gen supresor de tumores que controla las células y promueve la apoptosis y la reparación celular; su activación puede ser suprimida por mutaciones, las cuales en interacción con virus, podrían contribuir a la aparición de cáncer. Los sujetos con una variante polimórfica particular de p53 son más susceptibles al cáncer inducido por la infección por HPV. El presente estudio se llevó a cabo para detectar y correlacionar el polimorfismo/mutación de p53, la presencia de ADN de HPV en biopsias obtenidas de pacientes con cáncer de la cavidad oral y el hábito de consumir tabaco.
