Abstract
Trichomonas tenax is a protozoan that can be detected like a comensal microorganism from human oral cavity in some subjects. There are studies that related its incidence in patients with Marginal Chronic Periodontitis and other periodontal diseases. The aim of this study was to detect this species in patients with Gingivitis who assist to Dental School at Central University of Venezuela. In this study, 40 patients were selected and classified in two groups: 1) Experimental: 20 adult patients with Gingivitis who dental calculus samples were taken, and 2) Control: 20 adult patients without periodontal disease, who subgingival dental plaque´s samples were taken. Two samples of each patient were taken and cultivated in "Kupferberg Trichomonas Broth" (K.T.B.) medium tubes. The tubes were incubated aerobically and anaerobically at 37ºC for 72 hours. Protozoa were identified by direct observation of flagellar morphotypes that grew in K.T.B. medium, using light microscopy. Results of the study indicated that T. tenax was detected in 7 (35%) patients with Gingivitis and was detected in 2 (10%) patients periodontally healthy.
