Abstract
Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes and is a major cause of morbidity and foot-related problems. Damage of the sympathetic nerves in the periphery results in sudomotor dysfunction. The visual test Neuropad has been recently introduced as a novel diagnostic tool for the assessment of sudomotor function. Advantages of Neuropad consist in its wide availability, low cost, and easiness to perform. Besides, it displays a high accuracy for the diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy. The Neuropad test has been proven to be suitable for self-exanimation. Furthermore, recent data suggest that an abnormal Neuropad response correlates with foot ulceration. In the present article, we provide a concise review of published data regarding the clinical utility of Neuropad, with emphasis on the possibility for reliable self-examination with Neuropad, which broadens the spectrum of Neuropad applicability and provides a substantial simplification of the screening procedure, allowing its widespread clinical use.

Key words
visual test Neuropad, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, screening, sudomotor dysfunction, self-examination, foot ulceration
