An undue amount of morbidity and mortality globally is due to the lack of systematic and directed implementation of resources toward development of emergency care systems. The three-delay model of understanding maternal morbidity and mortality offers a number of transferable lessons which should be considered when designing further interventions for global emergency care systems.

The Breast Lesion Excision System (BLES, Intact medical corporation, Natick MA, USA) is the latest available biopsy tool for percutaneous removal of a single gross breast specimen. It is handly and user friendly and is a valid option to remove suspicious microcalcifications allowing better histological interpretation and lower underestimation than VAB systems used in the 90s.

The prevalence of positive interferon-gamma release assays is correlated to the occurrence of active tuberculosis, which varies widely among migrant children of different backgrounds. They more accurately than tuberculin skin tests identify those with tuberculosis infection and are effective for screening of migrants. Urgent, active cases may present within weeks after arrival and need clinical recognition.

The approach to management of inguinal hernia in premature infants requires a balance between risk of incarceration and anaesthesia. The incidence of bilateral hernia and need for prolonged postnatal intensive care support is much more in preterms. An algorithm for the management of inguinal hernia in premature infants is suggested.

Functional electrical stimulation combined with physiotherapy induced better outcomes in swing phase of the gait cycle, activation of the affected ankle dorisflexor muscles, and cortical function, when compared with conventional physiotherapy alone. FES not only produce orthotic effect but also has therapeutic effect.
