Abstract
Purpose: To analyze the effect of phacoemulsification on intraocular pressure (IOP) in normal and glaucomatous eyes. Methods: We performed phacoemulsification procedures through a clear-corneal temporal incision followed by implantation of foldable intraocular lens. We retrospectively analyzed: preoperative and postoperative IOP (day 1, months 1 & 3, years 1 & 2). Normal and glaucomatous cases were included in groups 1 & 2, respectively. We recorded the type of glaucoma and number of medications (NM) in group 2. Results: We analyzed 124 cases (group 1 = 92, group 2 = 32). IOP in group 1 (mm Hg) was 14.72 ± 2.4 (preoperative), 15.61 ± 5.4 (day 1), 12.76 ± 2.0 (month 3), 13.15 ± 2.3 (year 2). In group 2 PIO was 16.50 ± 3.1 mm Hg with 1.5 ± 0.8 NM (preoperative), 18.21 ± 7.1 with 1.7 ± 0.8 NM (day 1), 14.61 ± 1.3 with 0.48 ± 0.8 NM (month 3), 14.27 ± 2.5 with 0.18 ± 0.4 NM (year 2). The effect of phacoemulsification on IOP was statistically very significant in group 1 and moderately significant in group 2. NM significantly decreased in group 2, more pronounced in close-angle glaucoma. Conclusions: Phacoemulsification is useful in the surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataract, when a large decrease of IOP is not required.
