El trabajo aporta datos sobre la incidencia de enfermedad invasora neumocócica en un área sanitaria bien definida y evalúa el impacto de la vacuna en un contexto epidemiológico distinto del que se utilizó en los estudios de lanzamiento de la vacuna

En nuestra área no detectamos una caída significativa en la incidencia de enfermedad invasora neumocócica en niños menores de 5 años tras la introducción de la vacuna heptavalente. Esto puede ser debido a las bajas tasas de vacunación y a la mayor proporción de colonización/infección por serotipos no vacunales. Simultáneamente detectamos una caída en la prevalencia de la resistencia a penicilina y eritromicina. Probablemente la reducción en el consumo global de antibióticos en nuestro medio, así como la diversificación de éstos con la introducción masiva de fluoroquinolonas puedan explicar este cambio.
