MOTIVATIONS FOR WILDLIFE POACHING IN CHIQUIBUL NATIONAL PARK, BELIZE

Illegal wildlife poaching by Guatemalan community residents in Chiquibul National Park, a protected area in Belize, is declining, yet still prevalent. The subsistence needs of hunters and their families was found to be a more important factor affecting residents' decision to hunt than regulations or punishments. In addition, hunting was found to often be a byproduct of xate harvesting. Conservation strategies should be designed accordingly.
