SERUM LACTATE AS A PROGNOSTIC MARKER IN PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGERY PATIENTS

Trend in arterial lactate level during peri-operative period can be a useful tool to assess the prognosis in postoperative period in cardiac surgery in pediatric patients. In the present study, non-survivors had significant persistent elevation in lactates (> 4.0 mmol/l). Similarly, peak lactates in survivors correlated significantly with longer duration of cardiopulmonary bypass, mechanical ventilation and pediatric intensive care unit stay.
